ROOTED IN PRACTICE - Craft in the Bay

29 September - 4 November 2018, Craft in the Bay, Cardiff.

As well as my own practice, I work as a weaving lecturer at Carmarthen School of Art. The School or Art is in Carmarthen, West Wales, and believe me, it’s one special place! It’s fair to say that CSoA is one of the remaining ‘traditional’ school of arts that we have in Wales. The school is filled with freedom to express, exciting collaborations, and outstanding craftsmanship. This is the only degree programme in Wales where you can study weaving. I’m one of the tutors delivering weaving on the BA: Textiles: Knit, Weave and Mixed Media course.

Earlier this year saw the school celebrate 40 years at its current location (Jobs well Road) and to celebrate we held an exhibition of staff work. This exhibition has now moved on to Cardiff and is currently on show at Craft in the Bay.

Prospective students should seriously consider having a look at this exhibition, as the work on show is evidence of impeccable craftsmanship by the tutors.

Exhibition statement is below:

Makers Guild Wales is delighted to welcome artists and designers currently teaching at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gâr to exhibit with us this autumn in Rooted In Practice. Curated by textile designer, tutor and guild member Laura Thomas on behalf of the Makers Guild Wales, the exhibition provides a glimpse into the professional art practice of twenty five contemporary artist designers working in textiles, ceramics, film, sculpture, print and jewellery.

Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gar has been providing art education since 1854, being one of the first Art Schools set up in Britain following the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace in London. The School has been continually evolving ever since, responding to social, creative and cultural developments and the changing needs of its students, industry and wider community.

Carmarthen School of Art has a national reputation for skill-based teaching & learning underpinned by academic rigour. Rooted in craft practice, specialist making skills are a focus in each department and as such students have the rare opportunity to become expert in iron casting, weaving, ceramics or jewellery to name but a few.

2018 marked the 40 year anniversary of the School being based at its current location on Jobs Well Road in Carmarthen. The occasion was celebrated with an exhibition of staff work highlighting the fact that all have notable personal careers which compliment and inform their academic practice. This exhibition at Craft in the Bay represents the ethos of both the School and the individual makers.
