EQUAL
‘Equal’ is a handwoven double cloth piece that was woven for a solo exhibition at MOMA Machynlleth in summer 2024. For the exhibition, 90° I wanted to highlight the beauty of weaving, where the warp and the weft come together at a 90° angle. I wanted to highlight the limitation of weaving, always working with vertical and horizontal lines. Each piece was designed individually making the blanket completely unique. Working with wool allows me to create blankets that are equally as warm as traditional Welsh blankets but feel much lighter. The work is designed with a strong sense of belonging, using geometric shapes to create vibrant and contemporary blankets. Contrasting bands of color and various stripes were the inspiration for the design process. I’m interested in the limitations of 'simple' tools and what can come from the limitations imposed. As an experienced and creative hand weaver I’m able to adapt the work as it evolves to build a contemporary cloth with the aim of creating bespoke cloth to be handled, to be used and to be loved generation after generation.
Hand woven in my studio on a traditional dobby loom; what looks like an old wooden frame can create contemporary cloth. Each blanket has been individually designed making the piece perfectly unique. Designed with a strong sense of provenance, using geometric shapes to create a bold statement blanket or wall hanging for today.
